Small Craft Advisory Issued for Arkansas River Due to High Flows

LITTLE ROCK — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a small craft advisory for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System following heavy rainfall in western Arkansas.

Recent storms have led to a significant increase in river flow, with levels exceeding 70,000 cubic feet per second (c.f.s.) from Dardanelle Lock and Dam downstream to Wilbur D. Mills Lock and Dam. A small craft advisory is automatically issued when flows surpass this threshold due to increased risks for boaters.

Strong Currents and Debris Pose Hazards

The current flow at Dardanelle is near 90,000 c.f.s., and this surge is expected to travel downstream in the coming days. With these elevated water levels, boaters should be aware of:

  • Strong currents that make navigation difficult, especially for smaller vessels.
  • Floating debris, including large tree limbs and logs, which can damage boats and create dangerous obstacles.
  • Reduced control and maneuverability, increasing the risk of accidents.

Safety Precautions for Boaters

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urges boaters to take extra precautions, including:

  • Avoiding the river during high-flow conditions.
  • Wearing life jackets at all times.
  • Checking flow conditions and advisories before heading out.
  • Securing loose items that could be swept away.

River conditions are expected to remain hazardous for several days. Officials recommend staying off the water until flows subside to safer levels.

For updates on river conditions, visit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website or check local advisories.
